Training

The Chief Umpire, Annandale-North Springfield Little League, is responsible for insuring that Juveniles and Adults that umpire on a regular basis are fully trained and knowledgeable in the rules and mechanics of umpiring Little League Baseball.  Formal training will be facilitated by ANSLL's Chief Umpire. New umpires, or umpires 15 years of age or less MUST attend training.

Adults are encouraged to attend any or all training classes.  The purpose of that training is to review new rules and to discuss advanced umpiring techniques.

Training will consist of various training sessions. For new umpires (including adults) or umpires with 1 year of experienc there will be EITHER two 2-hr rules classes along with a 2hr mechanics session (must attend all 3) OR one 5 hour training all in one day.  The training covers:.

A - Ball/Strike, Fail/foul, Catch/No-catch, check swings
B -
Calling the bases, leaving before pitch
C -
Plate and Base Mechanics

Juvenile Umpires (under league age 16) with 2 or more years of experience must attend one 2-hour (Majors-level) training.  All experienced umpires who wish to work 90-foot games must attend one 2-hr Junior-level training.

Volunteering

The officiating of competitive sports is essential.  It is the intent of Annandale-North Springfield Little League to fully encourage the voluntary participation of parents in all aspects of Little League: administration, coaching, and umpiring.  Parents are encouraged to become fully-trained full-time volunteer umpires.  However, since personal schedules make it difficult to fully staff the umpire ranks with fully trained adult volunteers, juvenile umpires and untrained adult umpires will be used as required.

It is ANSLL umpiring policy that no umpire will be scheduled to officiate games in which a relative is involved as a player or coach.

At the discretion of the Chief Umpire, or in an unusual situation, younger umpires may umpire will serve as the field umpire.
