ANSLL Player Evaluations / Tryouts

All players League Age 9-12 are required to attend evaluations.  Players only need to attend one of the two sessions and the times listed are only a window to show, you will not need to be there the entire time nor do you need to show at the beginning, just somewhere in the window.

Each year ANSLL is required to hold evaluations to assess skill levels. Evaluations are not a test that must be passed, but rather an assessment of a child's skill and fundamentals in how to run, field, hit, and throw. These skill levels, along with other factors (such as age and safety) and previous manager ratings are used to place the player at the level most appropriate for them to have the best baseball experience.  All players will be placed on a team, this just helps place them with players of similar abilities.

  • League age 8 players will typically play at the A-machine pitch level. however, league age 8 who want to be considered for the AA division, must show at the Minors time slot.
  • League age 10 wishing to tryout for Majors must show at the Major's time slot.
  • Time slots are a window and all players may arrive anytime during their allotted time slot.
  • Returning Majors players from the Spring season are not required to attend. (Fall only majors must attend). (Determined at January Board Meeting each year).
  • Any scheduling conflicts contact Player Agent PlayerAgent@ANSLL.org.

What to expect:

Check-in at the school’s entrance upon arrival and receive player number and you will be assigned a group number (3/group) based on order of arrival. Although evaluations only take about 5 minutes, only 4 can be evaluated at a time, so wait times vary.

Groups are escorted to gym and players can throw a little to warm up.

Running - Players will be timed while running simulated bases.

Throwing - Players will play catch with spring Major's player or graduates and manager's will look at throwing mechanics, accuracy, speed and catching ability.  A variety of grounders and pop-ups will be thrown to evaluate fielding ability.

Hitting - Bats will be provided and players will hit several balls off a batting tee into a net to evaluate swing mechanics.  Batting helmets are used so if you have one bring it.

Players will need to bring tennis shoes, fielding glove & (helmet).

Common Questions

How do I know which time to show at?
League Age Chart

My child is 9, but we really want them to play another year of machine pitch.
Should not be a major issue, but please contact the Player Agent PlayerAgent@ansll.org

My child has played 2 seasons in AAA, how can I ensure they are selected for Majors?
There are no guarantees, but all 12's will be drated to Majors, unless a parent requests they play in AAA.  ANSLL Major teams are formed using the Little League International Common Pool Draft Method.   Players are selected based on skill and ability.  While those are not the only factors, they are significant.  Other considerations are league age and to a lesser extent grade.  All Major teams will have a max of 12 players on the roster.
You may want to get them involved in some camps and play some ball with them before the tryouts, so they are a little more comfortable in case they have not touched a glove since last spring.

Are these evaluations the only thing that determines if they get selected to a certain division?

No.  Each season prior the manangers turn in a player Rating form that is compiled into a master list.  That list is combined with the tryout scores and used as a "cheat sheet" for managers while they are drafting.
