Weather Procedures

In all matters please check with your managers.  There are many times someone goes to the field and gets the field playable, but people think the game is cancelled, when in fact it is not the case.

Weather Conditions
In accordance with rule 3.10 of the Official Regulations and Playing Rules, prior to the start of a game, the two managers decide whether a field is playable. If the managers do not agree then the decision shall be made by the umpire. Whenever there is a reasonable chance that the game may be played, this decision shall be made at the playing field not more than 30 minutes prior to game time. Managers and players shall report to the field or risk a forfeit.

A final determination for each field will be posted on the ANSLL website prior to game time WHEN POSSIBLE. Sometimes it is too close to game time or the volunteer who runs this website might not be available and in that case phone calls to your team would have to be made.
Fields will be posted as either:
1.) Closed by ANSLL
2.) Open, but in need of field preparation
3.) Open for games only

Please pay close attention to the specific
fields, as one field could be closed while another field is deemed playable. We are only able to do this since we are on an adopt-a-field program. The county personnel may still come by and overrule our decision. In that case remind them we are an adopt-a-field. If that does not work please listen to the county official.
Should weather impact the fields during the game, please defer to the regular process in which the umpires (during the game) and managers (before the game) consult on the situation.

Field Maintenance

ANSLL Community,

Reminder the fields we play on are kept somewhat by the county but mainly by the league. Who is the league? You are the league! ANSLL is all volunteers and there is no maintenance crew so pitch in a little at every practice/game and with everyone helping many things will go well. Yes, we appreciate you volunteering as a manager, coach, team parent, other aspects and keeping the fields maintained. We know your time is tight too, we are all volunteers but just a little time at practices/games will go a long way.  Thank you!

Please follow these simple tasks to make this league, our fields and our parks as nice as they can be.

Rake the dugouts to smooth out the flooring – this prevents puddles from forming in the dugouts.

Infield care – screen dragging prevents puddles and low spots from forming on the fields.

Raking the baselines – rake lengthwise from home to base, keeping the dirt off the grass. Do not go side to side it creates lips and forms a low spot in the middle.

  • Dragging can also damage the fields, do not drag right against the edge of the grass, keep 6” away from the edge.
  • Do not pull the screen into the grass, it will create lips when the excess dirt settles.
  • Do not broom puddles/mud without replacing the dirt removed and never broom into the grass. This will create lower spots, lips and lumps.

How to maintain the basepaths

Parent and Players need to clean up – don’t leave trash in the dugouts, near the bleachers or fields. There are trash cans at each field use them, the county empties the cans, but they do not pick up trash from the ground.

Keep the sheds organized – screens, rakes, power cords and other equipment in the sheds should be neatly organized.

Keep the sheds closed when not in use – there are many things that kids can be hurt with and the containers at Pine Ridge get very hot.  Ensure the sheds are locked if you are one of the last ones to leave.

Keep the cages locked when not in use – equipment is expensive and kids (players and siblings) can get hurt in the cages.

Ø     No pets on the fields – don’t believe ANSLL folks are guilty, but if you see anyone else remind them politely that pets are not allowed on the playing fields...the evidence is there.  This is a County violation.
Ø     No driving up to Pine Ridge – removing the post is only for emergencies however, if there is a handicapped situation this is allowed, but please be VERY careful.
Ø     Illegal parking – parking is limited at Howery and Pine Ridge be aware the police will ticket illegally parked cars. Use the overflow lots at both parks and obey No Parking signs….Especially Howery!
Mowing

We have a group of very responsible and trained kids that mow our fields regularly.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE MOWERS

Some of the mowers are trickier to use than you might think, especially the one at Pine Ridge now.

It doesn’t take much rain to make the field too wet to mow – especially at Howery.  These heavy mowers get stuck very easily.

Last year we had a great deal of rain.  The field would be too wet to mow for a few days so people would show up and decide to mow the fields and often get the mowers stuck in the mud.  This can really tear up the fields and more harm than good!  We also had service issues, etc.

The kids do a really good job of 1) mowing regularly and 2) keeping gas in the shed.  When others jump in and do additional mowing – the kids then show up and find the gas cans empty.

Please let them do their jobs.  Weather permitting, they get the job done consistently and without interfering with any practice slots.  (Which is pretty amazing, if you think of the amount of field use.)  If you find any issues with the grass cutting, please send note to your commissioners.

Finally, please try to put all the field equipment away in the shed (rakes, shoves and particularly the lime and lining equipment).   Don’t just stick them inside the door an block the mowers in.  We try to keep all the field equipment on one side and the mowers on the other side for reasonable access.

Field Care

Turface – the bags of “Turface” in the sheds are to be mixed in with dirt.  It works as a drying agent.  Do NOT put it in puddles of standing water!

Best procedure for helping with wet fields:

1.       Sweep out any standing water.  Generally, do NOT sweep into the grass, but rather sweep the water to other spots on the dirt.  When you sweep into the grass, the dirt goes with it and also produces those “lips” between dirt/grass.

2.       Once puddles are removed, raking helps the dirt dry quicker.

3.       Add dirt to low spots using the shovels and wheelbarrows.  All fields have a “dirt box”.  We are getting these re-filled soon as we’ve gone through them quickly this year.

  • Pine Ridge – behind the batting cages
  • Howery – by the shed near entrance to the park
  • Mick – behind home plate, on 1b side.

4.       When Turface is used, mix it in with dirt.

This past weekend, Turface was placed in standing water in the infield grass.  That is a waste of the Turface and will just kill the grass.

Any questions, please ask me.
